For nearly two decades, over 30,000 refugees from Eritrea and Sudan have been living in Israel legally with their children, the vast majority of whom were born in Israel. In the past two years, another 30,000 refugees have come to Israel from Ukraine, mainly women and their children who fled following the Russian invasion of their country on February 24, 2022. Other Ukrainians had come to Israel for various reasons before the Russian invasion and stayed. Overall, about 60,000 refugees have been living in Israel without the rights, recognition, and basic social services that every Israeli citizen is granted from birth. They have no state-funded health insurance, no social security benefits, no community welfare services, and no official status – not even that of a refugee.
