Gigi, Tiger and Puma, their friends called them. One of them had gone out for a run, another was returning from a night out. They were murdered in the city center by terrorists in pickup trucks. Tiger had been declared missing until the middle of December.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rt ta tb tc td te\" style=\"text-align: left;\">All three had crossed into Israel through its southern border about 15 years ago, and had remained here <a class=\"sm sn so sp iy ks sq sr ss st su sv rw fj jl jm\" href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/israel-news\/2024-03-18\/ty-article-magazine\/.premium\/the-invisible-victims-of-oct-7-even-in-death-asylum-seekers-in-israel-arent-recognized\/0000018e-5277-db53-a39e-daf704f30000\">without legal status<\/a>, in limbo. Since arriving in Israel they lived in Sderot and, like the rest of the city&#8217;s residents, experienced wars and periods of military escalation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rt ta tb tc td te\" style=\"text-align: left;\">It now turns out that even in their death the state ignores them, and their <a class=\"sm sn so sp iy ks sq sr ss st su sv rw fj jl jm\" href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/israel-news\/2023-10-16\/ty-article-magazine\/.premium\/the-unseen-victims-of-hamas-thai-workers-in-israel\/0000018b-333b-dff1-a5eb-ffffa2b60000\">families are not eligible for the assistance<\/a> and social benefits given to victims of hostile actions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">The official reason is that the law states that only those who entered Israel legally are eligible for recognition as victims of hostile actions. In the past the state recognized victims of hostile actions who did not have a valid visa at the time of the attack but who had entered the country legally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rt ta tb tc td te\" style=\"text-align: left;\">This was the case in 2021, when Israel aided the families of two Ukrainian citizens who were murdered in a terror attack in Bnei Brak.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rt ta tb tc td te\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The situation of most <a class=\"sm sn so sp iy ks sq sr ss st su sv rw fj jl jm\" href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/opinion\/2023-09-06\/ty-article-opinion\/.premium\/stop-netanyahus-cruel-illegal-threat-to-deport-african-asylum-seekers-from-israel\/0000018a-6a24-d8b9-affe-7a2c325d0000\">African asylum seekers<\/a> in Israel is different and more legally complex than that of Ukrainians: The former are denied recognition as victims of hostile actions because they entered Israel illegally, crossing the border from Sinai. However, their residency in Israel is considered legal because they are granted temporary humanitarian protection due to the security situation in their countries, Sudan and Eritrea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rt ta tb tc td te\" style=\"text-align: left;\">An absurd situation has thus been created in which the citizens of these countries live in Israel legally but without rights or legal status, even after they die. It is important to note that had Israel reviewed the three men&#8217;s asylum applications properly, they might have been granted asylum and been eligible for recognition as victims of hostile actions and the associated benefits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rt ta tb tc td te\" style=\"text-align: left;\">But Israeli policy toward foreigners, even when they are asylum seekers, is heartless.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rt ta tb tc td te\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The case of Gigi, Tiger and Puma is an opportunity for <a class=\"sm sn so sp iy ks sq sr ss st su sv rw fj jl jm\" href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/israel-news\/2024-03-06\/ty-article\/.premium\/netanyahu-dismisses-probe-findings-into-meron-disaster-labels-it-political-provocation\/0000018e-13f7-d7d3-abce-73ffca6d0000\">Interior Minister Moshe Arbel<\/a> of the Shas party to intervene and do the right and humane thing.
