Aid Organization for Refugees and Asylum Seekers in Israel

Director`s Foreword

ASSAF serves as a warm and supportive home for thousands of asylum-seekers each year, and I am proud to be part of this unique organization.

In 2011 we marked the 60th anniversary of the signing of the UN Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees. The Convention defines refugees, their rights and the legal obligations of the signatory countries towards them.

Although Israel was among the initiators of the Convention and one of the first signatories, we are now witnessing increasing draconic government policy towards refugees and asylum-seekers and radicalization of public discourse targeted at them, as well as a worsening process of demonization of asylum-seekers by the Israeli media and in official discourse

Regrettably, the State of Israel has failed to supply an appropriate response for the asylum-seekers and refugees now within its borders. Instead, it focuses efforts on creating various deterrent measures.

ASSAF runs several projects which provide psycho-social support to individual refugees and families. We help asylum-seekers to fulfill their rights in accordance with internationaland Israeli law, and act through education and information in order to increase public awareness of their rights and standing in Israel.

Our efforts are made possible by the generous donations of organizations and individuals.

I would like to invite you to join us and to support our work through practical volunteering or financial contribution on behalf of asylum seekers in Israel.

Executive Director, Adv. Michal Pinchuk.
