Petition regarding admission to municipal kindergartens in Kiryat Malakhi (2015)

In 2015, ASSAF received multiple appeals from asylum seekers residing in Kiryat Malakhi, concerning the municipality's refusal to admit their children in municipal kindergartens. This refusal contravened the Compulsory Education Law (1949), which obligates the State to admit every child over the age of three to a public educational institution, regardless of their legal status or origin.

Therefore, in June 2015, ASSAF and the Legal Clinic at the University of Haifa filed a petition challenging the municipality's policy. This petition was filed to the Beer Sheva District Court on behalf of 18 families of asylum seekers. In response to the petition, the court ordered the Kiryat Malakhi municipality to integrate the children in municipal kindergartens.
